12/13/2011Hooked Media teams with Best Buy, others to announce 'Get Discovered' app contest

For many developers creating a game is considerably easier than marketing and distributing an application. Most would rather focus on graphics, UI, and other in-game stuff instead of finding the best ways to get their title discovered. To address the issue, Hooked Media has partnered with Best Buy and a few other industry players in a new contest to help developers gain wide scale distribution. Winners will not only have their game offered through Best Buy's App Discovery Center but they can also receive seed funding from Trinity Ventures.

Developers interested in participating in the contest are encouraged to check out Hooked Media's website where they can learn more about integrating the SDK. Judging begins in the end of January with winners announced in early March.

Key dates include:

  • Games must be live in Android market by January 24th 2012.
  • Judging period January 24th 2012 – February 24th 2012.
  • Finalists notified by March 2nd 2012.
  • Winner announced at live event.

Hooked Media Teams with Best Buy to Launch Android Game Development Contest

Developer Contest, in Partnership with Best Buy, Trinity Ventures and VentureBeat, Aims to Help Android Game Developers Gain Wide Scale Distribution

San Francisco, CA, December 13, 2011 – With hundreds of thousands of apps currently in the Android Marketplace, it can be difficult for game developers to break through the clutter and have their games seen by the public. To help developers gain exposure, Hooked Media has announced the launch of "Get Discovered!," a worldwide competition for Android game developers that gives them a unique chance to win both wide scale distribution through Best Buy's App Discovery Center and seed funding from Trinity Ventures, a top Silicon Valley venture capital firm. The winner will also receive an online advertisement package from VentureBeat, one of the industry's most widely-read blogs.

"The Android Marketplace has a wide array of undiscovered content and we are proud to team with Best Buy, Trinity Venture and VentureBeat to provide developers with a new way of reaching a wider audience," said Prita Uppal, CEO of Hooked Media Group. "Every developer that enters the contest will have their games integrated into our platform, which will allow consumers to more easily find their content, so every developer that enters will gain exposure and potential installs."

San Francisco, CA, January 20, 2012 – With approximately a quarter of a million games currently in the Android Marketplace, how can a gamer discover all of the amazing content that fits their interests? The free app, from Hooked Media Group, provides personalized game recommendations based on each users' game preferences and ratings.

The Hooked app is a game recommendation and discovery platform that uses a proprietary algorithm to learn a users' gaming preferences, game play statistics and social mapping to provide them with personalized game recommendations and advanced search features. The more games a user ranks, the more customized the recommendations will become, thus providing the users with introductions to games that they may have never been exposed to, including those from smaller developers whose games may have not received significant exposure.

Similar to how Netflix and Pandora provide recommendations on user feedback, the Hooked app is designed to take user feedback and make the process of discovering games easier, faster and more accurate. Consumers can find the Hooked app in the Android Marketplace or at http://bit.ly/nrkqE0

"As the number of games in the Android Marketplace continues to rapidly increase, it is getting harder and harder for consumers to find the games that best fit their interest," said Prita Uppal, CEO of Hooked Media Group. "The Hooked app is an easy-to-use resource that will help gamers find the 'hidden gems' in the Android Marketplace and deliver compelling content that until now was not receiving the attention it may have deserved."

1/21/2012 New Hooked Android App Finds the Best Games

There seems to be an overwhelming number of games currently available in the Android Marketplace, and if you only choose what to play based on the ones that are at the top of the charts, you are probably missing out on a bunch of great games that would interest you. The team at Hooked Media Group have realized this, and has announced that their free app, Hooked, is now tracking well over 250,000 available Android games to help you sort through the clutter. Similar to how the Netflix and Pandora services gives their users recommendations on what to watch or listen to, this new app takes user feedback and provides a personalized recommendation of games based on your gaming preferences, ratings, stats, and social aspects.

The more games that you rank, the more personalized the recommendations become, helping you find games you might not have otherwise discovered, as well as providing development teams another way to get their titles in the hands of gamers.

The app also provides more than a recommendation service. The Personal Dashboard tracks your gaming statistics. You have access to all of your installed games right from the app, along with details of how many games you have been playing and how long you have played each of those games. You can also check to see what games your friends are playing, or browse the community and see what others are playing and whether or not they like those games.

Besides just some useful info, Hooked also has the ability to create a game queue. You pick the games you want, add them to your account queue, and when you have a chance, you can install and play them when it is more convenient. This seems to be a much needed feature, as portable gaming on a platform like Android is usually a quick pick-up-and-play situation where you only have a few minutes to grab a quick round of whatever you are currently playing. For more information on Hooked Media Group, visit their website or you can download the Hooked app in the Android Marketplace.

1/24/2012; Hooked Android app provides personalized game recommendations

Hooked is an app recommendation engine that helps you find Android games to specifically suit your gaming profile. Because the Android Market is filled with hundreds of thousands of games, many of which are low-quality, it's a really helpful tool for uncovering some of the lesser-known gems available. It takes into account the games you have installed on your device, your gameplay statistics, and if you log in using your Facebook or Google+ account, your social data as well.

To get started, open up Hooked, and rate the apps you already have installed (Like or Dislike). This gives it a starting point for its recommendations. To access recommendations, go to the Recommended tab at the top of the screen. If you don't like a recommendation, hit the X to remove it and bring in a new game. If you find a game you like, you can save it to download at a later time, or use the link to bring you straight to its page in the Android Market.

The Discover tab at the top of the screen shows you what games are being recommended to, rated by, or played by other Hooked users. This is a really useful alternative to the typical recommendation page, as it shows you what's relevant now.

The Search tab at the top lets you conduct a simple keyword search and filter by several factors including category, price, or release date.

One thing I like about the app is the My Games section, which lets you go in and play any of your installed games right from the Hooked interface. This means you could conceivably clear your Android desktop of all your game shortcuts and replace them with a single Hooked shortcut. This isn't a primary function of the app, but it's helpful if you take advantage of it.

Overall, I think Hooked does a great job of recommending games that a user might like. For instance, since it served up several puzzle and brain-teasing games to me, I could tell its recommendations were personalized. In fact, it recommended several games that I've downloaded and enjoyed in the past--which is a good sign. At that same time, this was also a bit of a pain point. I wish I could've rated apps that I've played in the past, but aren't currently installed on my phone. This could've minimized the number of recommendations that I've seen before. Despite this minor shortcoming, I highly recommend Hooked for anyone who loves discovering and downloading new games for Android. It's sure to help you find something new to play.
